The second labor is typically shorter than the first, although it can be unpredictable, just like every other birth. Before they scheduled the induction at approximately 41 weeks, this mother had some early labor symptoms and had been 3 cm tall for three weeks. At 8 a.m., they entered the hospital. and at 9:20 a.m. began taking Pitocin. The doctor casually remarked that the baby would be born in time for a “late lunch” after breaking her water.

I simply waited until it was time to board the plane because my stuff had been packed and waiting there for weeks. She informed me that the contractions were happening about 2-3 minutes apart and that she had ordered an epidural less than two hours later. I don’t know how she became dilated, but I quickly left. When I got to the hospital at 11:34 a.m., it was obvious that she was going through a transition. Although the labor department was so busy that the anesthesiologist wouldn’t be in for another 20 minutes, the nurse advised them to prepare for an epidural.

When the anesthesiologist entered the room, he attempted to insert an epidural, but things quickly got out of hand. When this adorable girl arrived at 12:13 pm, everyone in the room recognized that the epidural wasn’t going to happen. Fast. Sweet Pilar was delivered within a minute after the nurse phoned the midwife since the obstetrician was late. What this mother had to say about her birth is as follows:

My confidence that the comfort of the approaching epidural would last only a short while swiftly faded as the contractions got stronger. I kept hearing the anesthesiologist and nurse tell me to “relax, lie calm, lie still” while waves of pain swept over my body that I wasn’t expecting. That’s a bit of an understatement, but since the delivery of my first daughter was also induced with medicine, I didn’t have the mental model and context of spontaneous labor and “natural” contractions. Epidurals begin to work before the situation becomes too tense.

I recall saying, “I can’t do this, I can’t do this!” from time to time when I entered the valley of darkness and my only thought was, “This is not part of the plan!” Then all of a sudden, I felt like I was about to sit on a newborn baby! I can recall yelling, “Something’s coming!” because I was so terrified. I have no idea what will occur. I just had the sensation that I was about to be destroyed.

And this is the woman’s startled expression after realizing she has accomplished something she never thought she could. I still have questions about why I gave delivery without receiving an epidural. All of the pain vanished as soon as Pilar was born, and I was left feeling content, relieved, and in love with life. I already have a baby, I never believed I could achieve this!
