From an airplane, one can witness breathtaking views that are impossible to see from the ground. Among these views, one of the most spectacular ones is the sight of a beautiful rainbow.
The view from the window changes as the jet soars higher and higher. As the sky clears up, the earth’s curvature can be seen. Then, out of nowhere, a rainbow appears, spanning the sky and spreading bright colors in all directions.
A rainbow forms when light is reflected and refracted in water droplets, or in other liquids or surfaces. Because they are formed by droplets above the ground, centred on a line from the sun to the viewer’s eye, this means they are visible from a distance. This means it is not possible to ‘fly through’ a rainbow.
A rainbow forms when light is reflected and refracted in water droplets in the sky. Red light is refracted at a smaller angle than blue light, causing white light to divide into distinct wavelengths as it enters the drop. Red light leaves the drop at a smaller angle than blue light, creating a rainbow.
The rainbow appears considerably larger and more majestic from above than it does from the ground. It appears to be a bridge linking the sky and the ground, a passageway to a wonderful world beyond.
As the airplane moves forward, the rainbow seems to move with it, and the colors become even more vibrant. It’s an incredible sight, one that fills the heart with wonder and awe.
The rainbow then starts to vanish just as quickly as it did when it first appeared. As the color fades and the rainbow gets smaller, it eventually vanishes from sight.
But the memory of that beautiful rainbow will stay with me forever, reminding me of the incredible beauty that can be found in this world if we take the time to look for it.
