Joyce Meyer – How Long Will It Take For Me To Change?

Well, thank you for joining me today on, “Enjoying Everyday Life”, where I will be sharing God’s word with you. And I believe it has power in it to transform our lives. Today, I wanna talk to you about, well, the title of the message is, “How Long Will It Take For Me To Change”? You know, every single person when you receive Christ as your Savior, you begin to notice things about yourself that don’t line up with the Word of God. One of the jobs of the Holy Spirit who comes to live on the inside of us, after we receive Christ, is to convict us of sin. And it’s a good thing, it’s not a bad thing. It’s not intended to make you feel bad about yourself. It’s intended to cause you to realize where you’re at, compared to where you need to be. There’s no person that has received Christ… it’s impossible to not want to change.

So, we have been translated out of the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. We have new desires. We wanna be like Jesus, but we have to trust him to change us. Romans 12:2 gives us a very good description of what has to happen. It says, “Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs] but be transformed”, remember, not translated, “But be transformed (or changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind”. So, before you received Christ, much of your thinking was wrong. Our thinking had been influenced by the world and the ways of the world. And now, all of a sudden, we have a new life, we’re new creatures in Christ. We have new goals. We wanna be like Jesus. But before your behavior can change, your mind has to change. And the way that happens is by studying the Word of God, or listening, like you’re listening to me right now, your mind is being renewed as you listen to me. “[By its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourself]”, and I love this part, “So that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good acceptable and perfect will of God”. In other words, God has a good plan for you and you can know that good plan but never have it happen in your life, unless you study the Word of God, spend time with God and let God change you. He says, “Have your mind renewed so that you can prove,” so, you can see the proof in your life of the good plan that God has for you.

So, I can read this and say, “Well Jesus, I know that I’m not patient like I should be, would you please help me and change me in that area”? Now, even praying that, that doesn’t mean that tomorrow I’m gonna suddenly become patient. It probably means I’m gonna get some tests. I’m gonna have some opportunities to be patient. If you study the Greek it says that the word “Patience” is a word that, patience can only be developed through trials. Well, I don’t care for that much. I wish that’s not what it meant. But how can we be patient if we never have anything to be patient about? So, maybe I get a slow clerk in the grocery store and she’s not moving fast enough and makin’ mistakes. Well, now, I remember reading Colossians 3:12 yesterday, and, I’m startin’ to feel myself get impatient. So, right there, I can pray silently in my heart, “God, help me be patient with this woman”. And hopefully I’ll be successful and follow through and do what God wants me to. If not, then I’ll repent for my sin, he’ll forgive me, and then I’ll get to take that test again.

You might even say the grouchy neighbor-ites, bad boss-ites, the poverty-ites. We’ve all got our own brand of ites, these are enemies. These were people that they had to conquer and deal with so they could take the Promised Land. And God has promises for you. But there are enemies that will try to keep you from having it. And it says here, “And when the Lord your God has delivered them over to you”, you can’t take an enemy till God delivers them to you, “And you have defeated them, then you must destroy them totally”. The Amplified Bible says, “Utterly make no (treaty) with them or show them no mercy”.

Now, today, we’re offering you some teaching resources. Three teachings on CD called, “When, God, When”? We all wanna know, “When God, are you gonna change me”? “When are you gonna change my kids”? “When are you gonna change my spouse”? “When am I gonna have more money”? And then a book, “Unshakeable Trust”. As far as I’m concerned, this book “Unshakeable Trust” is one of the best books that I’ve written. Of course, I think they’re all good. But if you ever wanna have peace, you have to know how to trust God. We have to trust God to change us, trust God to bring what we need into our life. So, why don’t you give us a call or get online and order these resources. And don’t just order ’em and put ’em on a shelf somewhere. Listen to ’em, read the book, read it over and over. And it will help you get from where you are, to where you want to be. Thank you for being with us today. We love you so much. And I believe that God is doing a great work in your life.
